The 7in7 Story

Jonathon Alan Law 1956-1970

 By Mal Law:

In 2009 I made history by becoming the first person ever to run NZ’s 7 mainland Great Walks in just 7 days – a total distance of 360 kms in the longest week of my life. It was an adventure to honour the memory of my brother Alan, who died as a teenager from leukaemia. In completing the 7in7 my support runners and I raised more than $85,000 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation  and so helped make a huge difference to people suffering from this cruel illness.

Inspired by this success I am now dedicating more of my time to organising another great 7in7 Challenge late in 2010. Seven more iconic trails, seven more gruelling days, the same great cause.

WATCH MAL’s PLEA FOR SUPPORT

This year’s Challenge promises to be even tougher than last year’s inaugural event. While it is almost identical in distance, it uses less well-known tracks and frequently takes on rougher, tougher back-country terrain. It will be another epic test of spirit and endurance. As I have been known to say “why bother if it’s not harder than last time!”

This year will be notably different in another way too. Whilst last year’s Challenge involved a total of 17 runners, this year I am hoping to inspire many more people to join in a part of the Challenge and help in its goal of raising at least $150,000 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation

Overview

This year’s Challenge traverses a part of the country that holds a lot of cherished memories for me. Over the years I have spent a lot of time tramping, mountain biking and running in the Southern Lakes area. It is home to one of the densest networks of world-class trail runs anywhere on the planet. To spend a week on a massive adventure through these pristine but challenging landscapes has been another long-held dream.

Native bush, sparkling alpine lakes and rivers, high country tussock lands, old mining settlements, glaciers and snow-capped peaks. This area has it all. It can be stunningly beautiful, bathed in sunshine one moment then scary and treachorous an hour later as a storm blows in. You never quite know what you’re going to get but this only adds to the adventure and the challenge.
