Bush and beach, mud and sand…

All it needs is a few dinosaurs.... the Pararaha always reminds me of Jurassic Park!
Wednesday is long run day, but when I got out of bed at 5.30am this morning that didn’t seem such a great idea. By 7am I was at Huia and setting off in the pre-dawn half light I still wasn’t quite in the zone – perhaps the first time I have felt the motivation lows in 3 months of training. But then the sun came up over the Manukau harbour and the Waitakere bush started to work it’s magic…. within minutes there was nowhere I’d rather have been. The route today was gnarly – over the Ranges via Mt. Donald McLean, down the rough route to Whatipu and then 8kms of energy-sapping soft sand along the beach to the Pararaha (much loved by runners in the annual Wild Turkey race). A wade through a freezing cold, thigh-deep swamp and then mud, mud, mud all the way back up and over to Huia. Just 5 mins short of 5 hours – my longest training run this year. Beats a day at the office that’s for sure!

I hope the swamps and the virtual quicksand are not typical of the terraine you are going to have to tackle in the actual 7 in 7! How many kms was your trip today?
I’m guessing snow might be a bigger hazard than quicksand! All up it was a little over 30kms – slow going – but the Great Walks are much better, faster tracks than these – in theory at least!
