Since running the Sunrise to Sunset 100k race I’ve been feeling really good and thought my recovery had been great. So, as today marked the start of Phase 2 of training, I set the alarm for 5.30am and by 6am was off on my 38km ‘V6′ tour of Auckland’s volcanoes. I took it really steadily but after an hour or so I was getting niggles from a knee and a hip…. never mind they’ll go away I told myself, just keep it nice and easy…. by 20k things were definitely going downhill fast, and by 23k, faced with a climb of Mt.Eden, I decided it was time to quit – things were getting painful and I was risking a more permanent injury. Only problem was I was still 10k from home, even taking the most direct route! So out came the cellphone and 10 mins later good friend (and 7in7 support runner) Wade showed up and piled me into his car. Liberal doses of arnica have since been applied but things aren’t feeling great… looks like I need a few days off and the wise ministrations of physio Tim Joyce from Bodysmart. Keep your fingers crossed for me…. Cheers, Mal.
