Running the red line

Mal Xterra croppedYesterday was Xterra race 5 at Whitford – a place I have never run before but which gave us a really nice mix of trail conditions – lots of single track, some a little technical, non-stop hills…. just my kind of thing. And it was the first race in the series where I have turned up fresh, with no 100+km training week leading up to it. So I figured this was my chance to go hard, push the red line, and see just how good a placing I could get. The race data downloaded from my Garmin watch shows I did push it pretty hard with heart rate never dropping below 160bpm and an average of 169bpm. But I felt strong and only tired a little in the last couple of kms. Finished in just under 2 hours and placed 3rd out 0f 18 in the Masters category. Thanks to the crew at total sport for another great event. Thanks too to bioSPORT for donating the proceeds from their pre-race ankle strapping service to the 7in7/ Leukaemia & Blood Foundation – $54 of much needed cash for the cause.

Also out there racing were two of my 7in7 support runners Paul & Greg. Both the guys showed their training is on schedule…. they just need to start running with a 75kg pack strapped to their backs in prep for carrying me over the Kepler! Thanks guys… great day out!Paul and Greg Xterra 5
