Whitebaiting at Totaranui - kiwi as!
The road trip continues. Blenheim to Nelson with Radiohead blasting; Nelson to Motueka and an obligatory stop at one of the world’s best cafes, the Red Beret; over the Takaka hill (stunning, stunning, stunning views and memories of a younger self riding up that humungous hill many years ago), finally arriving at the Wainui Inlet early afternoon. From here I ran over the hill (more like a mountain) to Totaranui – the place most consider to be the end of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track (leg 3 of the 7in7). However, there is another spectacular but hilly 15kms of track beyond this which leads eventually back to the Wainui Inlet where I started my run. This forgotten gem is every bit as beautiful as the rest of the ATCC and the golden beaches were deserted on this sun soaked afternoon – except for one obsessive runner that is! Another 25kms for the training diary and the satisfaction of feeling strong despite this being the 3rd big run in successive days. Now sitting in the RoadCraft van, parked in the middle of nowhere typing up this blog and sipping a glass of pinot – bizarre but brilliant! Tomorrow the real work starts – 55kms on the Heaphy, followed on Weds by 55kms back out again…. crunch time in the training!
