Te Henga Walkway - the wild west coast

Te Henga Walkway - the wild west coast

After all the frustrations and worries of the last few weeks I had been looking forward to getting away with a couple of friends to run the Waikaremoana Great Walk this weekend just gone. But on Thursday I got a call to tell me that  there was a metre of snow lying around on the high point of the track! So for the third time in as many months that trip had to be canned! Let’s hope the snow’s all gone in 7 weeks time and the Curse of Waikaremoana is well and truly gone with it!

Instead, I got out for two fabulous runs and chalked up 71kms for the training diary. On Saturday I headed out west to Bethells Beach and ran a long bush & road loop fnishing with the Goldies Bush and Te Henga Walkways – I’d forgotten how rough these are! But all that west coast windswept air was good for the soul. Then yesterday I headed out with the old man of the 7in7 support runners, Graeme Brown, for a long circuit around Rangitoto and Motatapu Islands. It was a cracking blue sky day. We summited Rangi then headed across to Motatapu, where we had fun finding tracks all but hidden in knee-length grass, and then back to the wharf at Rangi, just in time for a quick dip in the sea and the last ferry back to town.

Bummer!

Bummer!

But the sting in the tail is that I’ve picked up an injury, diagnosed this morning as a torn calf muscle. Physio Tim tells me no running for 7-10 days, and instead I can look forward to lots of rehab work and aquajogging! The timing is bad because I’m supposed to be hitting peak mileage right about now. But I have promised to be a good patient and remain optimistic that I’ll hit the start line in good shape. Thanks Tim for all your help and guidance these past months.

    Mal,

Shame about the injury but stay focused and do the rehab. You will make it and the change of training wont do you much harm. Keep it up ; following your progress with real interest.

No wonder you were talking about aqua jogging. I hadn’t caught up with the injury business last night and here I was thinking you were being very lateral in your cross training…. absolutely follow the rules of rehab and be a good patient!!!
