The southern tip of the Waitakeres... the incomparable Whatipu Beach

For many years now we have owned a wonderful bach high in the hills overlooking Karekare Beach. This is a place that I find deeply spiritual and one that always relaxes me and soothes my soul. For the past 18 months it has been rented out, so we have not had a single night here, but now we have it back and just in time for the most gorgeous Labour Weekend, shared with good friends, good food and some great running. To make it even better I seem to be over my calf injury and so was able to crank up the miles a little. Over the 3 days that we’ve had out here I’ve covered a fair bit of terrain (some 65kms of very hill trails) and come through it feeling really good. This then is the start of my final phase of training, building to a 4-day back to back block in 2 weeks time that will cover some 125kms, simulating as close as possible the first 4 days of the Challenge, using the exact same nutrition & recovery plan as will be used over that phase of the Challenge. It’s great to be back!
