The Final Push – Day 1

Day1 006

Striding out near Karekare beach

We’re really getting down to the sharp end of things now, and to finish off my training in style I’ve planned 4 long days back to back, based out at my beloved Karekare. I drove out early this morning, laden down with high-carbo foods and protein-rich recovery nosh, in a state of high excitement. Following me was fellow 7in7-er Lisa, who I have met several times but not previously run with. What a difference it makes having good company on a long run – the time just flew by and we had a great old natter as we went. Our route took in both Karekare and Piha beaches and lots of hills in the vicinity of these stunning stretches of black sand. I was happy to run straight past the Piha store when we approached it for the second time, 3 hours into the run, but Lisa insisted that we stop for a coffee (ouch, sorry Lisa, that’s a terrible lie I know!). We found we only had enough money for one but the lovely lass behind the counter gave us two anyway – I think we were looking pretty desperate!

Day1 012

Lisa looking strong on Mercer Bay Track

All up it was a splendid 33km, 5hr outing and we both felt pretty good at the end of it. Just a shame we’d had water problems at the house and I couldn’t offer Lisa a shower before she jumped in her car and drove back to town. As soon as she was gone I managed to fix the problem and an hour later was luxuriating in a steaming hot outside bath…. next time Lisa, I promise! I’m now watching the sun dip across the horizon and looking forward to another great day tomorrow with a fresh bunch of running pals who will be showing up bright and early at my door.
