Day 2: Young – Wilkin Circuit
Monday November 29th
Start: Blue Pools, Makarora River, Mt. Aspiring National Park
Finish: Confluence of Wilkin and Makarora Rivers (jetboat pickup)
Distance: Approx. 55 kms
Ascent: Approx. 1,700m during the day; highest point Gillespie Pass 1,629m.
Terrain: Relatively sheltered in the valleys but very exposed in the higher parts. Mostly back-country tramping trails, rough and technical in many places.
Rating: Very Hard – Extreme. Not for the feint-hearted during bad weather
Chosen because: This is a classic high alpine route through the jewel of NZ’s national parks. Gorgeous bush, icy clear rivers, rocky peaks and glaciers in the near distance. This run has it all!
Notes: This can only be run as a full day and is only suitable for fit, experienced trail runners.
