Day 6: Greenstone-Mavora Walkway
Friday December 3rd
Start: Greenstone Wharf, Lake Wakatipu – reached by launch from Glenorchy
Finish: Mavora Lakes
Distance: Approx. 52 kms
Ascent: approx. 600m during the day – a pancake day compared to the one before and the one after!
Terrain: A mixture of good quality tramping track and 4WD farm track.
Rating: Moderate-Hard. This day is made tough by its length rather than the terrain, which is relatively benign compared to some of the other days. But it’s still alpine country and we will need to be prepared for anything.
Chosen because: It passes through classic south island alpine landscapes. To start the day with a short launch trip across Lake Wakatipu will be special. There then follows some of the most stunning beech forest trails in the land, much of it alongside the pristine waters of the Greenstone River. It then moves into an open, high country station setting where we will be running beneath high peaks before reaching the incomparable Mavora Lakes.
Notes: This can only be run as a full day and is only suitable for fit, experienced trail runners.
